English as an Additional Language (EAL)
EAL 21G
This course is intended for beginners and low intermediate level students learning EAL and emphasizes the acquisition of practical and functional language through a wide range of learning strategies. The two primary objectives are to improve basic communication skills and to increase cultural awareness among the
students. The six language skill areas of reading, writing, speaking, listening, representing, and viewing are covered.
EAL 31G
This course is intended for intermediate and advanced students learning EAL. The emphasis is on helping students develop effective strategies for improving their acquisition of English. Students will gain confidence in communicating successfully in English speaking environments, both academic and social.
English Language Arts 20E (ELA 20E)
EAL students are provided learning activities that parallel the 20F course. However, the materials and instructional methods used are specifically designed for students whose first language is not English
English Literary Focus 30E (ELALF 30E)
Building on the language foundation established in the English 20E course, EAL students continue to develop proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, listening, viewing and representing. Although the pace of the course is more deliberate, the outcomes for the 30E course are identical to the outcomes in other English
30S courses. Students who have completed this course are encouraged to register in a regular ELACF 30S or ELALF 30S course.
EAL Tutorials (.5) 21G (.5)/31G (.5)/41G (EAL (.5) 21G/(.5) 31G/(.5) 41G)
These courses are designed to enable students to apply study skills learned to assignments received in other courses. Students are given the opportunity to build their confidence in communicating successfully in an English speaking environment. Research skills are taught in collaboration with the teacher-librarian.
